HISTORY OF BURSA TURKEY
The first settlement was established in a hilly area in the North West of Anatolia by the British in 185 BC. And this place is called Prusa. Between B.C. 74 to A.D. 395, it remained under the control of the Romans. It was under Byzantine rule between A.D. 395 to A.D. 1326.
The city, which was located on the same hill until the Ottoman period, became the capital of the Ottoman Empire, and it spilled beyond the city walls. The Ottoman Sultans expanded the city further, and the Kulliyes built on the hills played an important role during the Ottoman Empire period.
Kulliyes are the most important foundation structures in the Ottoman Empire and represent solidarity in the understanding of Islam. The fact that the first complex of the Ottoman period is located in Bursa has made it even more interesting. The first Kulliye was built by Sultan Orhan in 1339 consisting of a mosque, imaret, madrasah, bathhouse, and inn.
TODAY’S MODERN BURSA CITY
Today the city of Bursa is located within the borders of Turkey. It is located in the North West of Turkey and has about 3 million population. Also, Bursa city is the 4. metropolis of Turkey in terms of population density. Bursa is one of Turkey’s most important production city. And, it stands out with the automotive, textile, and agricultural sectors.
PLACES TO VISIT IN BURSA CITY
In the city of Bursa, which was accepted to the UNESCO world heritage list in 2014, the main 6 places are specifically mentioned in the list. These are Bursa Inns, Sultan complexes (Hüdavendigar (I. Murad) Complex, Yıldırım (I. Bayezid) Complex, Yeşil (I. Mehmet) Complex, Muradiye (II. Murad) Complex, Orhangazi Complex) and Cumalıkizik village.
Bursa, which has the characteristic of being the first capital city of the Ottoman Empire, had an important commercial role. Today, when you visit the Ottoman inns, covered bazaars and traditional markets in Bursa, even its architecture and style make you feel the power of the city at that time. During the time of Osman Bey, the founder of the Ottoman state, this place was the capital for 39 years. Many of the early Ottoman works of art revealed 14th century can still be visited.
Perhaps the most important city where you can discover and understand the magnificence of the Ottoman Empire is Bursa. Perhaps the most important and valuable place to visit in Bursa is Cumalikızık village. Therefore, we will explain the Cumalikızık village in more detail under a separate title.
CUMALIKIZIK VILLAGE IN UNESCO
Cumalıkızık village is the best surviving example of early Ottoman rural architecture. It is also a 700-year-old foundation village located on the skirts of Uludağ, the famous ski resort. The village takes many visitors on a journey from the past to the present, with its narrow and stone streets and colorful mudbrick houses.
60% of 270 Ottoman-style houses are still in use. Apart from the historical houses, the village bath and mosque, which we call monumental works, are among the works protected by Unesco. With the locals living here, the village is transformed into an open-air museum.
HOW TO GET TO BURSA FROM ISTANBUL
Since Bursa is a highly developed city, there is not even a transportation problem. Among the transportation possibilities; There is land and sea transportation. If you prefer road transportation; Bursa is about 4-5 hours from Istanbul. The roads are very good and wide.
Apart from renting a car, you can also reach by bus. Buses depart from Istanbul to Bursa approximately every hour. Another way of transportation is Ferry. This is a great opportunity for those who love sea transportation. However, it can become a bit problematic if you are not very careful with the transfer points.
Unfortunately, train transportation between Istanbul and Bursa is not possible. However, in 2019, the Turkish State started High-Speed Train works between Istanbul and Bursa and plans to complete this work in about 3 years. With this project, the distance between Istanbul and Bursa will be reduced to 2 hours.
HOW TO GET TO CUMALIKIZIK FROM BURSA
Cumalıkızık village is 10 km away from Bursa center. Reaching the village by Public Transport is both economical and fast. Your journey by local bus takes about 15 minutes. Public Transport, which is approximately 10 Turkish lira, can be reached quite easily from the city center. If you own your own vehicle, you would do way easier than public transportation. Just open google maps and drive for 10 minutes to Cumalikizik.
